Cannabis Storage and Child-Resistant Packaging: 7 Safety Questions

· BUDDHA BROS

Preventing accidental exposure involves secure storage, clear identification and an understanding of packaging terms. These seven questions explain the barriers and the steps to take when an exposure is suspected.

Where should cannabis products be stored around children and pets?

CDC recommends locked storage, out of the reach and sight of children and pets. A high shelf alone does not provide the same barrier as a locked container. Think about visitors as well as household members: foods, drinks and other cannabis products should not be accessible to children.

Does child-resistant mean childproof?

No. Child-resistant packaging is designed to make opening difficult for young children; it cannot guarantee that every child will be unable to open it. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping even child-resistant packages locked away and out of reach. Packaging is one barrier, not a replacement for secure storage.

Is a resealable package automatically child-resistant?

No. Resealable means it can be closed again. Child resistance is a separate property involving the package design and applicable testing or standards. Tamper-evident packaging is another concept: it helps show whether a package has been opened. These terms answer different safety questions and should not be treated as synonyms.

Can a package lose child resistance after it is opened?

Yes. California DCC distinguishes initial child-resistant packaging from packaging designed to maintain child resistance during repeated use. Some initial packages must carry a warning that they are not child-resistant after opening. Read the package information and keep products securely stored after opening; a previously sealed package is not automatically a continuing barrier.

Why keep the original packaging and label?

Keeping identifying information helps prevent confusion about contents and preserves information that may be useful to healthcare professionals. THC-containing foods can resemble ordinary snacks. Keep them separate from regular foods rather than putting them in an unmarked food container. Appearance, flavour or a familiar-looking wrapper does not establish that something is ordinary food.

What should an adult do after a child may have swallowed cannabis?

Seek medical guidance promptly rather than waiting for symptoms. FDA advises contacting a healthcare provider or Poison Control after suspected accidental ingestion. In the United States, Poison Control is available at 1-800-222-1222; call 911 for an emergency. Elsewhere, use local poison or emergency services. Keep product information available to share with the clinician.

What signs can indicate serious accidental exposure?

Children exposed to THC can become very ill, with problems walking or sitting up, or difficulty breathing. Severe symptoms need emergency care. Edible effects can be delayed, so an absence of immediate symptoms does not establish that there has been no exposure. A healthcare professional or poison service can advise on the situation.
