Purple Kush: 7 Questions About Origins and Purple Colour

· BUDDHA BROS

Purple Kush brings together two different questions: a variety's reported history and the biology of purple plant colour. Neither colour nor a familiar name is a laboratory measurement.

Where is Purple Kush reported to have originated?

Leafly's reference profile associates Purple Kush with Oakland, California. This is a published origin account, not a documented creation date or an independently established identification of its first breeder.

What are its reported parent strains?

Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani are the parents named in that reference profile. The attribution describes the commonly reported cross; it should not be treated as independent genetic verification of every plant bearing the name.

Is Purple Kush indica or sativa?

The profile classifies it as indica. Such labels are traditional categories rather than a guarantee of chemical uniformity. Research on cannabis labelling shows why the category should not be mistaken for a precise genome-wide measurement.

What makes cannabis turn purple?

Anthocyanin pigments can produce purple tissues. A 2023 cannabis study identified cyanidin-3-rutinoside as a major pigment in its purple samples. That research examined selected accessions; it was not a dedicated analysis of Purple Kush.

Does purple colour mean a higher THC concentration?

Colour is not a THC test. The pigment research measured anthocyanins, a different group of compounds. Its results do not establish purple colour as a way to estimate THC concentration or rank potency.

Is Purple Kush the same as OG Kush?

No. Their published histories describe different names and origin accounts: Purple Kush is associated with Oakland, while Josh D's OG Kush account traces that cultivar from Florida to Los Angeles. Sharing the word Kush does not establish that they are identical.

Does every purple cannabis plant belong to Purple Kush?

No. The pigmentation study found purple tissues across multiple cannabis accessions. Purple colour occurs beyond one named variety, so it cannot authenticate Purple Kush. The archive label on a photograph likewise remains a label, not a genetic test.
