THC, CBD and THCA are chemical names, not interchangeable labels. These seven questions explain their meanings, common misconceptions and the limits of what the names tell us.
What do THC, CBD and THCA stand for?
THC means tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD means cannabidiol, and THCA means tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. They are cannabinoids associated with the cannabis plant. The names identify chemical compounds, not varieties such as indica or sativa. Knowing a compound's name does not tell you how much is present in a particular product.
Is THCA the same as THC?
No. THCA is a related acidic compound that can convert to THC when heated. CDC describes THCA itself as non-psychoactive, but that does not mean a THCA-containing product cannot become intoxicating. A label reporting only delta-9 THC can leave out the potential contribution from THCA; this is why total THC is a separate concept.
Does CBD being non-intoxicating mean it is risk-free?
No. CBD by itself does not produce the same high as THC, but it can still affect the body. FDA identifies risks including liver injury, changes in alertness and interactions with other medicines. Non-intoxicating is not the same as harmless, and a CBD label is not evidence of a medical benefit.

Does CBD cancel out THC?
It should not be assumed to. In a small randomized study summarized by NIH, high oral amounts of CBD combined with THC produced stronger effects than THC alone. The study involved 18 healthy adults and does not establish every possible combination or route of exposure. It does show why CBD should not be treated as a reliable antidote to THC.
Are ordinary CBD products the same as approved medicines?
No. FDA approval concerns a specific medicine, formulation and intended use. Epidiolex contains purified CBD and is approved for particular seizure disorders. That approval does not extend to every CBD oil, food or other product, or to unrelated claims about sleep, pain or anxiety. Retail terminology is not a substitute for evidence and medical assessment.
Is CBD another word for hemp?
No. CBD is a compound; hemp refers to a category of cannabis plants. CBD can come from hemp or other cannabis plants. The words describe different things, and neither a hemp label nor a CBD label alone establishes the complete contents or effects of the finished product.
How are cannabinoid names different from label amounts?
THC and CBD identify substances. Milligrams and percentages describe quantities or concentrations. Check whether a figure refers to one serving, a whole package or a concentration. California manufactured-product labeling distinguishes these measurements. A ratio or amount is not an instruction about what an individual should take.
